1. Unique design of iPhone 16

The iPhone 16 will maintain a similar size and shape to the previous iPhone 15, but likely feature a 6.1-inch, an aluminum frame with slightly tapered edges, and a matte glass back. There may be a slight reduction in bezel size, but this is more likely to be a feature reserved for the iPhone 16 Pro models.

One of the key changes between the current iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 is in the camera styling. For the new iPhone 16, Apple is switching to a new vertical, pill-shaped camera arrangement, similar to the iPhone 12 series. This change is driven by the new Spatial Video feature, which requires the camera lenses to be arranged in a line.

All iPhone 16 models, including the base variant, will feature a new Action Button (replacing the mute switch) and a dedicated Capture Button for quickly launching the camera. The Capture Button will function like a camera shutter button, allowing users to focus with a light press and capture photos with a full press. The placement of these new buttons will result in the mmWave antenna being moved to the bottom left side, below the volume keys.

Overall, apart from these changes, the iPhone 16 will remain largely similar to the iPhone 15 in terms of size, weight, and features like the USB-C port and IP68 water/dust protection. The color options may include some familiar shades as well as a new Purple variant.

2. Bigger screens

While the overall design of the iPhone 16 will be similar to the iPhone 15, Apple is reportedly planning one notable change in terms of screen size. Multiple reliable sources, including analyst Ross Young, indicate that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature larger displays compared to their predecessors.

The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to have a 6.3-inch screen, up from the 6.1-inch display on the iPhone 15 Pro. Likewise, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is rumored to boast a 6.9-inch screen, an increase from the 6.7-inch panel on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. If these rumors prove accurate, the iPhone 16 Pro Max would become the largest iPhone model ever released. Additionally, this would mark the first change in iPhone screen sizes since the introduction of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max in 2020.

3. Capture button

The upcoming iPhone 16 models will feature a brand new Capture button for the camera, located on the right side of the devices. This will be in the same spot currently occupied by the mmWave 5G antenna on iPhones sold in the United States. The surface of the Capture button will be touch-sensitive. This means that iPhone 16 users will be able to perform zoom functions by swiping left and right on the button’s surface. Additionally, users will be able to bring the camera into focus by lightly pressing the button, and then activate the shutter by pressing the button more firmly. This new Capture button design represents a notable change in the camera controls and functionality for the iPhone 16 lineup.

4. Software and AI

The iPhone 16 is expected to bring a number of notable software and AI-powered enhancements to Apple’s flagship smartphone. At the core of the experience will be iOS 18, the latest iteration of the company’s mobile operating system. One of the key areas of focus for iOS 18 is expected to be the Lock Screen. Apple is rumored to be redesigning this interface, offering users more customization options and the ability to interact with new types of widgets. Additionally, iOS 18 is reported to include new messaging capabilities, such as the ability to edit or unsend previously sent messages.

Beyond the system-level improvements in iOS 18, the iPhone 16 is also anticipated to significantly advance Apple’s integration of generative AI across its first-party applications. This could manifest in the Photos app, where AI-powered features may enable intelligent image editing, automated captioning, and even generative photo creation. Similarly, productivity apps like Notes are expected to gain AI-assisted functionalities, such as the generation of text summaries or smart organization of content.

Should You Upgrade?

The current iPhone 15 is a representation of a significant upgrade over the iPhone 14 from the previous year, introducing a new design with the Dynamic Island, a 48-megapixel camera, a USB-C port, and several other notable improvements. In contrast, the upgrades expected for the iPhone 16 are likely not going to be as substantial as those seen with the transition to the iPhone 15. As a result, most current iPhone 15 users will have little compelling reason to upgrade to the iPhone 16.

However, some users who would particularly value new AI features, improved performance, enhanced spatial video capture, and a dedicated camera button may still find the iPhone 16 worth the upgrade. Given that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro are set to launch in less than two months, this might not an ideal time to purchase a new iPhone 15. Unless you have an immediate need for a new iPhone, it would be wise to wait until September to either get an iPhone 16 model or see the prices of the iPhone 15 lineup decrease.
